I read a lot of blogs. I read blogs I find in Facebook groups. I find blogs I enjoy through other blogs. I have a whole inbox and Bloglovin’ feed full of blog posts. But because I follow so many, I’m also picky about what blogs I follow. I want to make sure that when I read someone’s blog, it’s a genuine use of my time and I’m getting something out of it. So today I wanted to share with you 4 reasons I read a blog. If your blog has these 4 things going for it, I’m way more likely to stick around!
Your Posts are Useful
I know I’m not the only lifestyle blogger who has struggled with this one before. Yes, you can share things about your personal life. But if your blog isn’t useful to other people, they aren’t going to keep reading it! Try to find a balance between personal and informative. Limit the diary-style posts where you talk about your day and what’s new in your life. I love posts that give me new information, teach me something new, or inspire me.
A great way to do this is taking a topic that is relevant to you and, instead of just writing about your own experience, make it helpful for other people! Here’s an example! Recently I wrote a post about dating my husband. I could have written about one of our date nights, but that wouldn’t be relevant or interesting to my readers. Instead, I turned it into a helpful post about how and why to keep dating your spouse!
Your Site is Easy to Navigate
You don’t have to be a professional designer or shell out thousands on a blog design to be successful, but you do have to have a clean, navigable blog design. If I can’t find what I’m looking for, I’m probably not going to stick around long.
So what keeps me around longer?
1. A search bar. If you blog about a topic that I want to know more about, I might head for the search bar. Make sure I can find it!
2. Related posts. I love when people include related posts at the bottom of each post! That way, if I’m not interested in every topic you write about, I can be guided toward other posts that I will like!
3. Email or social media. I don’t typically bookmark blogs that I want to go back and visit again. Instead, I follow them via either email or social media. My favorite way to follow blogs is Bloglovin (follow me on Bloglovin!), so I always like to see that button! If a blog has subscriber perks and original content via email, I’ll follow their email list. Have all those links in your sidebar!
You’ve Got Personality
This one is more dependent on what kind of blog you write. If you’re a food blogger, I honestly just care whether or not I like the recipes. But for the most part, I’m way more likely to follow a blog where the writer shows their personality! There’s only so much information to share on the internet, honestly. But how you package it is 100% more important!
You Post Consistently
Fairly regularly I go through and clean out my social media accounts of people who aren’t active, including Bloglovin’. It’s not that I don’t love your blog design, personality, or helpful tips, but I follow a lot of blogs. It’s not worth it to have people sitting on the list who aren’t even posting.
